Helpline Volunteer Job Description

Job Description: Volunteers are needed to serve as Listeners on the Crisis Helpline, our 24-hour crisis hotline. Initial training and apprenticeships will be provided to give Listeners all necessary knowledge and skills to serve as an effective Helpline Listener. 

Hours required: 8 hours per month, with a possibility for additional hours if desired

Schedule: Flexible scheduling. After completing training, volunteers can schedule hours during weekdays, evenings, overnight or weekends. 

Duties and Responsibilities: Complete training and apprenticeships to become Listeners on the Crisis Helpline. As Listeners, volunteers are expected to answer hotline phones, provide support, listening, information and referral to callers, initiate intervention if needed, enter call reports into online database, and perform other duties as needed. 

Qualifications:

  • Transportation to and from call center site in North Wilmington
  • Possess empathy, caring, and a true desire to help those in need
  • Basic computer, word processing, and internet knowledge
  • Responsible and motivated

Supervisor: Volunteers report to the Crisis Services Volunteer Coordinator and will also be assigned to a volunteer Support Worker, who provides additional guidance and support.
