Events

ContactLifeline Celebrates
National Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April 5, 2011

What: Two major events are planned in celebration of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April): (1) A major advertising campaign involving DART paratransit vehicles, which will build awareness in all parts of Delaware of the need for everyone to "get involved" in the prevention of sexual assault, will be unveiled, and (2) Governor Jack Markell will present a proclamation recognizing April as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Delaware.

Who: ContactLifeline, the nonprofit organization that provides a comprehensive program of crisis services for Delawareans in crisis (including Delaware's only 24/7 Crisis Helpline and Information/Referral service, helping individuals at risk of self-harm, sexual assault victims and others; Rape Crisis Counseling; Hospital Accompaniment for victims of sexual assault; Rape Aftercare support; Sexual Assault Prevention Education and the Sexual Assault Network of Delaware) is producing/facilitating the planned events.

Why: In 2005, nearly 12% of Delaware's adult women (32,400) reported they had nonconsensual sex with someone during their lifetime, without their consent (Delaware Behavioral Risk Factor Survey, 2005). In 2007 and 2008, Delaware ranked 3rd and 9th, respectively among all fifty states, regarding the incidence of forcible rape (Delaware Law Enforcement Agency Uniform Crime Reports for 2007 and 2008). ContactLifeline has organized the planned events to raise awareness of the serious problem of sexual assault in Delaware.

Who Should Attend: Elected officials; victims and survivors of sexual assault, along with their advocates; members of the Sexual Assault Network of Delaware (SAND) and others concerned about the incidence of sexual assault in Delaware. The Executive Director of the U.S. Office on Violence Against Women, Susan B. Carbon, will be in attendance.

When: Both planned events will be held Tuesday, April 5, 2011. The first event (see "What", above) will be held at 11 :00 am on the west side of Legislative Hall in Dover, Delaware. The second event will be held in the Governor's office, located on the second floor of Legislative Hall in Dover, Delaware.

Where: Legislative Hall, Dover, Delaware.

It's Time to... Speak Up In Your Community

..some guys behind us started to make comments. At first, it wasn’t too bad. We tried to ignore them, but the more they drank, the ruder they got. They wanted us to sit with them, to sit on their laps, and their comments just got more disgusting after that...

It's Time to... Respect Your Co-Workers

...after a few drinks, we started making the usual comments about women’s bodies. Nothing too bad and the women were laughing along with us. I didn’t think much about it until Monday morning when one of the women, Kay, came to talk with me about how she could no longer work here...

It's Time to... Speak Up In Your Customers

...She pulled up my shirt to measure my waist. Then without even asking, she measured my inseam from the inside of my leg. Then, she did the same thing to my cousin. It just didn’t feel right that she measured near the crotch of my pants...

It's Time to... Talk To Your Family

...Samantha said that her dad was checking her vulva for glitter. I thought it was odd, but did not think much about it until Samantha said that Elliot had done that before...

It's Time to... Help a Friend

...I notice this one girl is pretty drunk... As I walk toward her, I overhear her say that she is getting pretty dizzy, so one of the guys - a hockey player I don’t know - offers to take her outside to get some air....

It's Time to... Discuss Boundaries With Your Neighbors

...my daughter Sarah Rose, 5, came home saying that Cherie’s son, Jack, 4... she said that he wanted to play house, lie in bed and pretend to sleep together. But when he touched her body, she did not like it....

It's Time to... Protect Your Students

"one of my teen student assistants was in the paper for exposing himself to a group of kids..."
